Membership

RAC membership consists of the BJI Executive Committee members (EXEC) as well as representative BJI investigators and trainees with expertise in the research areas that are key to advancing the strategic plan of the Institute. To the greatest extent possible, membership will be diverse in terms of expertise, gender, culture, and sectors. The Director is responsible for soliciting nominations for vacancies and for appointing members in consultation with the EXEC. Total membership will normally be up to 15 members. The BJI Director serves as the chair and the BJI vice-Director serves as vice-chair. Membership is voluntary and participants will not be remunerated.

Terms

Appointed members serve a 3-year term that is renewable once. To maintain continuity, appointments will be staggered so that one-third of members are replaced or re-appointed each year. The BJI Manager of Operations and Manager of Research and Innovation are non-voting, ex-officio members of RAC, and not eligible to serve as its Chair or Vice-Chair.

Meetings & Decision Making

Monthly meetings are held to ensure ongoing process related to scientific and/or scholarly priorities. (This complies with Western University’s policy #7.9 that stipulates that the Director will consult in person and/or electronically with RAC at least every year, or more frequently at his/her discretion.) Formal minutes will not be taken, but summary of discussion points and action items will be compiled by the Manager of Research and Innovation to guide the work of RAC members and the administrative team. On all matters, the RAC is in place to advise and support the Director and membership regarding scientific and/or scholarly priorities. The RAC will strive to operate by consensus where each member, including the Chair, may contribute to the consensus-making process.
