BJI Hosts Inaugural Dr. Frank Beier Memorial Lecture
On Thursday, October 15th, the Bone and Joint Institute (BJI) hosted the inaugural Dr. Frank Beier Memorial Lecture, honoring Dr. Beier’s legacy and his contributions to musculoskeletal research, mentorship, and collaboration.
The invited keynote speaker, Dr. Richard Loeser, Director of the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, delivered the inaugural lecture and shared insights from his work in osteoarthritis and cartilage research.
The afternoon also recognized students working in the areas of skeletal biology. Dr. Cheryle Séguin, Acting Chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, introduced the Frank Beier Graduate Opportunity Scholarship, which was awarded to Vara Vacirca, an MSc candidate in Physiology and Pharmacology.
Dr. Matthew Grol, Associate Director of the Bone and Joint Institute, also presented the Susan Bernier Memorial Award in Skeletal Biology, awarded to Justin Tang a PhD Candidate in Anatomy and Cell Bioloy.
Both awards recognize and support the next generation of researchers while carrying forward the legacies of two valued members of Western’s research community.
The lecture concluded with a reception, providing an opportunity to continue conversations and connect with colleagues across the MSK research community.
Thank you to Dr. Loeser, our award recipients, and everyone who joined us for this inaugural event.
