BJI Research Spotlight: Bone Recovery After Wrist Fracture
This week, we’re highlighting impactful research titled Hands Up Program: Results of a feasibility study of a randomized controlled trial of a bone health exercise and education program for adults aged 50–65 post distal radius fracture, led by Bone and Joint Institute members Professor Joy MacDermid, Professor Dianne Bryant, Professor Mike Szekeres, Dr. Nina Suh, and Professor Christina Ziebart at Western University. This study looks at how to better support bone health after a wrist fracture, which can often be an early warning sign of osteoporosis. While traditional rehabilitation focuses on restoring wrist movement, this research explores a more comprehensive approach to recovery.
Using a 6-week online exercise and education program, the team evaluated whether a combined approach could improve recovery and help prevent future fractures. Participants completed guided exercises alongside education on bone health, nutrition, and fall prevention. The results showed that while recruitment for the program was successful, maintaining long-term participation and adherence was more challenging. However, participants reported positive experiences and found value in the combination of exercise and education.
These findings highlight the importance of integrating bone health strategies into rehabilitation and support the development of more accessible, patient-centered programs to reduce future fracture risk.
