BJI Research Spotlight: Do Metal Hip Implants Affect Brain Health

This week, we’re highlighting impactful research led by BJI members Professor Matthew Teeter and Professor Brent Lanting, alongside Professor Shahnaz Taleb and colleagues at Western University. Their study examines an important question: do long-term, well-functioning metal-based hip implants have any effect on brain health? Although hip implants can release very small amounts of metal into the bloodstream over time, it has remained unclear whether this could influence the brain. To better understand this, the research team used advanced MRI brain imaging, blood metal testing, and cognitive assessments to compare individuals with long-standing hip implants to age- and sex-matched individuals without implants. The results were reassuring. The study found no differences in brain structure or thinking ability between the two groups, suggesting that well-functioning, long-term metal hip implants are not associated with changes in brain integrity.
