Dr. Demirkaya joined the Department of Paediatrics and Division of Paediatric Rheumatology at the Children's Hospital and Western in 2017. Dr. Demirkaya has completed his Master of Science in Autoinflammatory Diseases, is a Scientist at the Child Health Research Institute, Associate Scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute and a Professor at Western University. His research interests include autoinflammatory diseases (FMF, HIDS, TRAPS, CINCA/NOMID PFAPA, and Behcet) and their genetic background, vasculitis and outcome in rheumatic diseases in children. His translational biology research program in autoinflammation, which includes multinational-multidisciplinary collaborative projects with multiple members of the BJI, is focused on investigating the mechanisms, genetic and pathobiology of autoinflammatory diseases, development and progression to identify new therapeutic targets. He is also working on the impact of ethnic, environmental and genetic factors on the disease presentation. He recently joined the Robarts institute as an associate scientist and set up research laboratory at the same institute. Dr. Demirkaya has been extremely prolific in his research productivity, having published 114 articles in international, peer-reviewed journals and 28 book chapters, as well as 104 articles included in conference proceedings. His work has been cited already more than 3100 times. These articles have consistently been featured in some of the best journals in the field, including Nature Genetics, Annals of the Rheumatic Disease, Arthritis Rheumatology and PNAS.
