Associate Professor
Michael D. Naish is an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and holds a cross-appointment in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Western Ontario. He is also a Scientist at Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robotics (CSTAR). With a broad multidisciplinary background, Dr. Naish’s main fields of expertise include mechatronics, multisensor systems, machine vision, robotics, design, and medical devices.
Over the past decade, his work has focused primarily on the development of devices to improve the delivery of minimally invasive surgery and therapy. This includes the development of a variety of sensorized instruments to measure the forces encountered in surgery, techniques and devices for minimally invasive tumour localization, miniature mechanisms suitable for dexterous surgical tools, vision and inertial sensor-based systems for measuring hand and head motion, and systems for laparoscopic and arthroscopic training and skills assessment. Recent work has explored the use of mechatronic systems to characterize and treat Parkinsonian hand tremor. Dr. Naish is currently a member of the Editorial Board of IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.
