Looking back...

My background is in immunology and my research focuses on rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is an autoimmune disease that mainly targets the moveable joints within the body. I was interested in the collaborative specialization in musculoskeletal health research program offered by the Bone and Joint Institute because of its transdisciplinary nature. I recognized that this program would deepen my understanding of musculoskeletal diseases and allow me to expand my knowledge beyond the immunological aspects of disease to encompass a more holistic view of RA.

Value of the BJI & CMHR research environment and support...

The CMHR courses introduced me to many new research methods that were relevant to my project. I received new insights from various fields and was introduced to experts with whom our lab later collaborated. The Bone and Joint Transdisciplinary Award that I received in 2022 was critical for my research and enabled me to test out new methods with our collaborators, including microCT imaging and behavioural testing, that had not been previously used in my lab. Additionally, the health and leadership training at Ivey has been invaluable. One workshop, focussing on decision making and analytics in healthcare settings, showed me a potential career path that I had not previously considered for myself.

Advice for current and future trainees...

I would highly recommend the CMHR program to anyone looking to pursue a career in MSK health research because it broadens your education, provides exclusive access to health leadership training from the Ivey School of Business, and allows you to learn more about an important field of research.
